iBurn 2014 (Offline Burning Man Map & Guide)

iBurn is an offline map and guide for the Burning Man art festival.

 

In 2010, I was asked to design the app icon, logo, and splash screen for this official Burning Man app.

 

We decided to take several real world elements present at the actual Burning Man locale (the desert sand and the Black Rock City Map) and incorporate them into our design. The splash screen background is that of a sandscape. The "i" matchstick graphic is intended to be a representation of a person and the spirit of the Burning Man. The arms of the "i" represent the blocks from the Black Rock City Map (the map locale and community of Burning Man). The flame dually represents the Burning Man namesake and the spirit of the event. 

 

The app icon concept has evolved slightly over the years but the original design concept remains.
