MONARCH MIGRATION
"Monarch Migration is a science research tool for tracking the migration behavior of monarch butterflies. Its primary function is to allow users to quickly enter location information and flight characteristics (body direction and flight direction) for upload to a cloud-based server. The directional data is gathered from the mobile devices compass."
I was asked by Tracy Villareal at the University of Texas to design and illustrate the app icon, logo, and splash screen for this project.
After sketching a few concepts, we decided on a compass in the sky motif with a monarch butterfly accent to represent the app's branding. The monarch was illustrated using several scientific reference images. The sky was conceptualized as both an ethereal as well as literal interpretation of the insects journey. The butterfly on compass idea was carried over to the logotype's O with the butterfly illustrated and placed in a similar fashion to the main imagery.
